Unlike Long Beach, where the ocean roars up the beach through big breakers, the tide at Rathtrevor surges and flows. On our rainy last day the water was choppier today than most days, but still, as the tide rose, it did so like a flood.
At one point I was standing on what must have been a slightly raised area between two surging arms of the ocean. I was taking picture of some sea birds fooling around on a raised area in the rapidly disappearing beach. The water was flowing toward and around them from both sides and the birds were hopping about looking for food and paddling in the rising water.
The ocean surged around the sandbar, cutting the birds off. Focused on the birds and looking out to sea, I wasn’t paying attention to what the water was doing behind me.
Suddenly I realized that it was surging forward from both sides and the two arms were about to connect. I shot a quick photo of the surging tide (crooked, I now see) then ran down the beach before the tide cut me off.
The water was shallow, of course, so I wouldn’t have been truly stranded, but I would have gotten my feet wet if I’d lingered!
